Guild Endowment Fund

The Endowment Fund was created in 1986 from the sale of the Guild’s Sesquicentennial Quilt. Initially, one-half of the profits from the annual “Quilt Celebration” were earmarked for the fund each year until the original funding goal was reached. At present, the fund is primarily used to fund one or more grants annually. The grants are awarded to individuals or organizations who work to further the art of quiltmaking.

The long list of grant recipients includes: Old City Park, the Austin Area Quilt Guild, Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, the Rhode Island Quilt Documentation Project, the Northwest Pennsylvania Quilt Documentation Project, the Hawaiian Quilt Documentation Project, Dallas Independent School District, American Quilt Study Group, Old Sturbridge Village, Texas Tech University Museum’s Quilt Collection, and the American Museum of Quilts and Textile in San Jose, California.

Separate from grant monies, funds under the supervision of the Endowment Committee have also funded exhibitions of quilts at the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA).

The Endowment Committee is comprised of approximately six members, with the chairperson appointed by the Guild President. The main responsibilities of the committee are:

  • Administration of the Guild’s annual grant – which includes publicity, reviewing grant proposals, recommendation of grant recipient(s) to the Executive Board of the Guild, and overseeing the grant project.
  • Suggesting other special projects such as scholarships, special exhibits, or other grants – then serving as a liaison between the Guild and special project funding recipients.

The committee considers several criteria in evaluating each grant application. These include the overall impact of the project on the world of quilting; the compatibility of the goals of the project with the mission of the Quilter's Guild of Dallas; the ability of the applicant to complete the project; the quality of the project; the quality of the application; and contribution of the project to the body of knowledge about quilts or awareness of the art of quilting.

A few of the grants we have funded include:

  • Funding for a prepublication photography project for the quilts in the museums of west Texas coordinated through Texas Tech University, Lubbock,TX. The grant is for collaborating institutions of $8813.00. This project will build on the documentation done by Barbara Brackman in 1998, which the Quilter's Guild of Dallas helped to fund.
  • Funding to the York County Heritage Trust in York, Pennsylvania for part of their request for the exhibit "Out of Hiding - 150 Years of York County Quilts, 1790-1949." These funds will go towards the installation and publicity of the exhibit.
  • Funding to Karen Musgrave for a "Quilter's Save Our Stories" oral history project involving members of the Needles & Threads Guild, a group of approximately 100 African-American quilters who meet in the south side of Chicago.
  • Underwriting to Vikki Pignatelli to sponsor the 2003 Sacred Threads exhibit in Columbus, Ohio.
