Dallas Quilt Celebration Special Exhibits 2012
Make sure to visit our impressive Special Exhibit displays at the show:"Alzheimer's Illustrated: From Heartbreak to Hope"
We are honored and privileged to bring the exhibit, "Alzheimer's Illustrated: From Heartbreak to Hope" to show attendees. So many in our Guild have been touched by Alzheimer's Disease and many of our guild had the opportunity to sign this exhibition quilt in honor or memory of someone we know that has struggled with this disease. Ami Simms, nationally acclaimed quilter, founded the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative, sponsor of the exhibit, in 2006 as a grassroots effort to raise awareness and fund research for Alzheimer's disease. The exhibit features 182 "Name Quilts" six inches wide and seven feet tall, containing the names of more than 10,000 individuals affected by Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Hanging among the Name Quilts are 53 small format art quilts (9" x 12") that each interpret the disease in a unique and creative way. The exhibit will tour the United States through 2015. As a companion exhibit to "Alzheimer's Illustrated: From Heartbreak to Hope", we are also proud to present a collection of quilts created by members of the Dallas Area Fiber Artists Guild which will be donated to the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative as part of fundraising program Priority: "Alzheimer's Quilt Project - Pathways." This program is so named for the urgent need for research dollars and the hope that quilters across the country would make participation in this project a priority. The miniature quilts in this exhibit will be showcased by the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative on the website for public sale later in 2012. Bookmark the webpage, buy a quilt or consider creating a quilt for this important area of continued research. For more information or to view the quilts for sale: www.alzquilts.org/quiltsforsale. "American Quilt Study Group: 2010 Study of 19th Century Star Quilts"
We are equally excited to present a historically accurate exhibit created by members of the American Quilt Study Group for their 2010 quilt study of 19th Century Star Quilts. Members were challenged to replicate, either exactly, or as an interpretation, a quilt of a particular style or period. Through this process, members explored the history, textiles, techniques and quiltmakers of the exquisite star quilts from the 19th century. We are proud to announce that one of our own members, Rägi Marino, is featured in this exhibit. Come enjoy these beautiful star quilts and join us in learning from this body of work. The American Quilt Study Group is a national association open to all quilters who would like to enjoy association with and access to a network of knowledgeable people who are passionate about quilts, their past, present and future. For more information about the American Quilt Study Guild and their 2012 Quilt Study Challenge: www.americanquiltstudygroup.org. Below right is Ragi Marino's gorgeous star quilt, which is featured in the catelog at left, Stars: A Study of 19th Century Star Quilts. The catelog is available for purchase from Kansas City Stars books at www.pickledish.com. We will have copies of the catelog at the show to view and hope to have a number of copies available for sale. Patterns are included for 10 of the 39 quilts. A percentage of the proceeds will go to help support AQSG.
"Flowers + Photos + Fabrics = Quilts," by Carol Morrissey
Carol Morrissey made her first quilt in the eighties and was smitten! She loves all kinds of quilts and techniques, but she is especially fond of making quilts that are inspired by nature. Her quilts have been featured in numerous publications and juried shows as well as a solo exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science. Three of Carol's quilts are included in the recently released book, Lone Stars III, A Legacy of Texas Quilts, 1986-2011. Join Carol for a lively talk during the show about her quilts that are on display in the Special Exhibits area. Carol will discuss how flowers inspire her to paint and quilt, and how you can also be inspired by nature's color palette. She will share information about the tools and methods she uses to make her quilts, such as paints, inks and dyes, digital imagery and her favorite tool, a camera. The Quilter's Guild of Dallas is especially honored to host Carol's exhibit that complements the Show Theme, "In Full Bloom." Carol is "one of our own," serving as an active and inspiring guild member for many years. Come enjoy Carol's Garden of Quilts!
